Why is concrete a better alternative than asphalt?

Although asphalt may be a little more economical than concrete, over years a good quality concrete driveway will last about 30 years with little to no maintenance. On the other hand, asphalt driveways will need periodic sealing coats to prevent cracking.

What causes concrete to crack?

By nature, concrete shrinks as it hardens. When placed on supporting soil or around steel reinforcements, the concrete mass is prevented from shrinking.

Do cracks in the concrete indicate a structural problem?

In most cases no. An engineer should investigate cracks that have movement relative to the opposite side.
